Matt, I've been a regular reader of your blog, but never commented. I think part of the problem is 1. every athlete going for the same companies, and 2. athletes totally failing to make a business case for why they should be sponsored.
Make a case for paying your costs. I'm a fan and an owner of a profitable service company. Why should I sponsor you? What can you do to help my business? If more athletes could answer those questions, I think it would be a lot easier for aspiring athletes.
I can't give answers to all of Tony's points, but I don't think the sponsorship opportunities are being explored anywhere near enough.
